Be the best version of you today

So I often see quotes along the lines of “you don’t have to be better than someone else, just be better than you were yesterday”. On the one hand I totally agree with not comparing yourself to others and focusing on yourself. However, when I think about it quotes like these are still putting pressure on us, and in a world where almost everyone is stressed about something and already feeling the pressure, surely we should be trying to give ourselves a break?

So I say, you definitely don’t have to be better than anyone else, you don’t even have to be better than you were yesterday…just try and be the best version of yourself that you can be today.

Maybe today is so long and you are so tired and you really need a cuppa (that sounds very familiar!) And on those days maybe the biggest success you can have is to get out of your PJs and brush your teeth. Or maybe today you are so full of beans, ready for anything and loving life. And maybe on days like that the best version of you has a green smoothie and goes to Pilates on their lunch break and walks home from the station. And that’s great. But none of us can be that picture perfect version of ourselves every day and we shouldn’t even try to. Just go with what the day throws at you and adapt to that.

The best version of yourself will change from day to day so stop comparing yourself to who you were yesterday, or who you were before you had a baby, or before you got injured or before you put on some weight. You aren’t that person now and you will be slightly different again tomorrow. The important thing is to keep trying and acknowledging your victories, however small they may seem compared to what others do or what you have done in the past.

So today, and every day, just do you…whatever that looks like.
